Midway Powerboats - Kenney Jam 2025 Entry

How to Play

  • Click and hold either mouse button on the screen to charge your puck. Release to throw. The longer you hold it the more power you put into your throw.
  • You are playing against an automated opponent on the right side of the board.
  • Be the first to get your boat to the center to win.
  • Holes closer to the center of the board score you exponentially more points.
  • Choose two player mode to switch off with a friend in local co-op. In this case the automated opponent is just a bit slower to allow a little time to hand off the mouse between players.

Theme

This year's Kenney Jam theme was POWER. We decided to play on that in a few different ways:

  1. Power (in mathematics) - The core mechanic of our game is that the holes your puck falls into are exponential multipliers. The center hole raises your dice role point value to the 3rd, the center ring raises to the 2nd, and the outer ring the 1st. The distance you move on the track is a product of your aim and the randomness of a 2-4 dice roll.
  2. Power (in physics/energy) - The game theme is a boat race, where your rolls literally "power" your boat.  There is also a subtle nod to atomic energy with the layout of the moving board.

Challenges

We had a lot of fun trying to jam as many of this year's challenges into our game as possible and managed to include 5 of 6!

Here are the challenges and how we included them:

  1. Single pack: We used a single pack, the Board Game Pack for all visual assets in this game. No primatives or anything, just the pack with minimal post processing.
  2. No text: We did not use any text in the game. We leveraged some of the pieces in the Board Game Pack to serve as buttons and visual queues.
  3. Mouse only: This game can only be controlled by the mouse. No keyboard input is used.
  4. Co-op: This game can be played in a local co-op mode by choosing the 2 die on the game selection menu. In this mode players can work together by alternating shots, and the time between automated opponent shots is a little more relaxed to allow for friends moving the mouse between one another.
  5. Symmetry: We designed the layout of the entire game to be left/right symmetrical, with the player to the left and the automated opponent to the right.
  6. Cross-dimensional: This is the only challenge we decided not to include, so as to leverage the Board Game Pack for our choice of game.
