Entry for Go Godot Game Jam 4

Made in Godot 4!

Play as a playful little poltergeist who gets your kicks by scaring the residents and guests at the house you've occupied since your death nearly 100 years ago. The latest new owner is throwing a big housewarming, so you're ready to have some fun by scaring all of the guests out of the house.

It's not all fun and games though... Watch out for one guest in particular, if you draw too much attention to yourself, you risk getting exorcised from your own home!

Theme: Less is More

The objective of the game is to clear the house of guests to win. Doing so requires not being too over eager with haunts in a single room at a time. Metaphorically, we were aiming for the "too much of a good thing can end up badly for you" (in this case, too much fun for the player character gets them exorcised) interpretation of the theme.

Notes

Currently doesn't play well in Mac browsers (e.g., Safari), though has been tested and works on Chrome on Mac (load time is currently a bit slow) and Firefox (probably other browsers) on Windows. Untested in Linux.

No download currently available, just HMTL in-browser version.

Known bugs

Here are a few known bugs that were totally not there in testing, we swear! (they probably were)

1. The low-end of the difficulty doesn't fade the black screen correctly. You can still smash the arrows and have it work for a little while longer on the easier modes, but it doesn't reflect the difficulty as intended.

2. If your very last haunt summons the Cardinal, it will trigger the mini game AND the end-game dialog. Then skip the minigame and go to the boss fight...

3. Sometimes the party-goers get really comfy and don't want to hang out elsewhere. They should all be scare-able from somewhere, but it can be frustrating if it happens to more than one.

4. Hit F1 to head back to the main menu in a pinch. Don't worry, you don't have to do the tutorial again...

5. There are rare cases of a party-goer passing through a haunt and triggering an exorcism without getting scared

6. If you haunt party-goers who are already scared in an otherwise empty room, you may trigger an exorcism

A few tips

The best game designs require documentation... Right?

1. Missing arrows makes the timer advance more quickly, careful with the button mashing!

2. The size of the light at each haunting point indicates the rough range that a party-goers will be scared by it

3. There is a difficulty slider in the settings menu (though there's a known bug, see above)

4. Hit the "reset data" button on the home screen to start the game over. Just know it will also reset your sound settings and key bindings!
